Find Yourself Again, Ask for What You Need, and Stop Disappearing

You Don’t Have to Disappear to Take Care of Everyone

For as long as you can remember, you've anticipated everyone's needs before they even asked, and you've taken pride in making sure everyone knew you cared. You may have been part of the PTA, volunteered on school field trips for your kids, and held down a job while also running the house and making sure everyone was clean and fed.

This may have been enough, until the kids started getting older and more self-sufficient, and there wasn't anyone who needed you so completely anymore. Or perhaps the kids, the job, your spouse, all still depend on you so much that there isn't any time left for yourself, and no one seems to be paying attention to what you're carrying.

One thing is certain: you are the one carrying the mental load, and you feel all of the responsibility but don't often experience the joy anymore.

You're not certain what to do with this, because you haven't identified what you actually want, and when asked, you have a hard time naming it. Things between you and your partner may revolve around getting the kids to practice and the leaves raked. You get along fine with him, but it feels like you're logistical managers rather than intimate partners. Despite everything looking good from the outside, you feel lonely in your marriage, and a gnawing sense of dissatisfaction relating to the contents of your life. Your friends all appear to be doing the same dance and seem okay.

You don't know who to talk to about this, because you signed up for it all, and somewhere in the middle of all that signing up, you started to disappear.

Therapy might be the answer if you find yourself here…

  • You're getting tired of being the Girl Scout Cookie mom, unloading 4,000 boxes of cookies you somehow signed up for

  • You go out on a rare date with your spouse, and all you talk about is work and the kids

  • Your partner asks if you're interested in sex, and you'd honestly rather watch reality TV

  • You thought you were done with kids, but now you find yourself babysitting your grandkids

  • You don't know who you are anymore, because everyone else's needs have come first for so long that your own got lost somewhere along the way

  • You're doing all of this without a partner, or your caretaking has expanded to aging parents on top of everything else

If you're searching for relationship counseling for women, individual therapy for women, or help feeling heard in a relationship, I offer online therapy for women in Maryland and Pennsylvania.

What's Actually Going On

Somewhere along the way, you merged with the people who needed you, wife, mother, employee, and the roles took over. There's no separate you left standing outside of them, you've been disappearing into the roles, one caretaking task at a time. That doesn't mean your partner doesn't care, or that you have to accept less just to keep the peace. It means you've likely spent years overriding your own needs to keep things running smoothly, and that pattern can change.

In Counseling for Women, you will:

  • Find the parts of yourself that got buried under everyone else's, and the hidden needs that go with them

  • Build the capacity to ask for what you need, without guilt, using communication strategies that actually work

  • Find your way back from logistical managers to partners

  • Rediscover what brings you joy, separate from what you do for everyone else

Therapy Can Help You Find Your Way Back to Yourself

You've spent so long being everything to everyone that you may not know what it is to be you. This work doesn't ask you to care less, or do less for the people you love.
